DESCRIPTION:DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS THE SUNSET BEACH CLEANUP IS POSTPONED TO 23/09/2023. FOLLOW OUR SOCIAL MEDIA FOR FURTHER UPDATES. \n\n\n\nA sunset beach cleanup\, followed by a stargazing session. This is the proposal of the European project H2020 MAELSTROM to celebrate the World Cleanup Day on September 16th\, an international initiative that brings together more than 190 countries in beach cleaning actions around the world \n\n\n\nThe MAELSTROM Sunset Beach Cleanup will take place in Vila do Conde\, Portugal\, on September 16th and is a joint action between the MAELSTROM project\, the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR)\, the Vila do Conde City Council\, Counting Stars\, the Centre of Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation of Vila do Conde (CMIA) and CIMA Research Foundation. The event counts also with a vast support from national and local partners such as DOCAPESCA- Portos e Lotas S.A\, Águas do Norte – Grupo Águas de Portugal\, FOCA – Focus On Critical Actions and UNIFARDAS and is also part of the European EU Beach Cleanup campaign\, which aims to raise awareness about marine pollution and how our habits impact the oceans. \n\n\n\nThe MAELSTROM Sunset Beach Cleanup will start at 5pm in front of the CMIA headquarters (Avenida Marquês Sá da Bandeira\, 320\, 4480-916 Vila do Conde; 41°20’39.6″N 8°44’44.0″W)\, with the reception of the participants. A brief explanation on MAELSTROM’s activities and the main causes and impacts of marine litter will be given by CMIA and CIIMAR scientists and educators. Following this introduction\, the beach cleaning will begin\, culminating with a snack break. SUMMARY:Beach Clean-up Vila do Conde 2022
DESCRIPTION:MAELSTROM joins World Cleanup Day 2022\, an international initiative that brings together volunteers\, governments and organizations from more than 190 countries to tackle the global problem of Marine Litter (ML). This is also the mission of MAELSTROM\, which on September 17th will promote a multidisciplinary beach clean-up in the city of Vila do Conde\, Portugal.  \n\n\n\nThe event is scheduled to start at 9 am at the headquarters of the Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation (CMIA) in Vila do Conde (41°20’39.6″N 8°44’44.0″W). After the reception of the participants\, the event will start with an introduction to the impacts of marine litter on ecosystems and to the MAELSTROM project activities. Following this introduction\, the clean-up activities will take place at the Senhora da Guia beach). The MAELSTROM App\, a mobile application developed within the project will be used for litter identification.  From 12 pm\, educational activities for all ages on the effects of marine litter and microplastics will take place at CMIA headquarters.   \n\n\n\nDuring the event\, the MAELSTROM team will also present the Bubble Barrier\, a technological solution for the collection of marine litter in rivers which will be implemented in Vila do Conde in the next months.  The Bubble Barrier was developed by The Great Bubble Barrier\, a partner of the MAELSTROM project.  \n\n\n\nThe event is organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto (CIIMAR-UP)\, The Great Bubble Barrier and CIMA Research Foundation in partnership with the Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation (CMIA) and Municipality of Vila do Conde. DESCRIPTION:On 2nd June\, in cooperation with VERITAS and with vast participation organised by Venice Lagoon Plastic Free\, MAELSTROM organizes a clean up in Venice. SUMMARY:Second edition of international workshop ‘Removal of Marine Litter and Circular Economy: Challenges and Opportunities’
DESCRIPTION:This event will present innovative and sustainable technologies for the removal and recycling of marine litter – particularly plastics – creating a chance for large industrial entities\, start-ups\, and NGOs to meet. The workshop is the second annual event held as part of the MAELSTROM (coordinated by CNR ISMAR) and In-No-Plastic (coordinated by Norwegian SINTEF) projects\, both financed as part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. Within this context\, technological clusters will be presented by the most promising voices in the blue circular economy: an economy which focuses upon the oceans and seas of our planet. It would be remiss also not to mention the long-awaited and recently approved ‘Salvamare’ law (i.e. ‘sea rescue’) which will be presented by Senator Andrea Ferrazzi: member of the 13th standing committee (local area\, environment\, environmental goods) of Italy. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will house representatives of other European projects\, as well as independent entrepreneurs working in planning and experimentation for innovative marine litter collection devices\, through technology aimed at the circular economy. \n\n\n\nThe event\, which will take place from 10.00 to 17.00\, will act as an important opportunity for the following European H2020 projects to share scientific and technical knowledge: MAELSTROM\, In-No-Plastic\, CLEARSEA and MARLESS.
