Mission ‘Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030’ – The Mediterranean Lighthouse in Action

Thrilled to announce that MAELSTROM is participating at the high-level event EU Mission Restore our Oceans and Waters – The Mediterranean Lighthouse in Action, to be held on May 30-31 in Palermo, Italy. The event is organized by the European Commission in close cooperation with the Italian government, the Sicily Region, and the University of Palermo, with the support of the BlueMissionMed Co-ordination and Support Action.

The event will be an opportunity to witness the political commitments of the Mediterranean countries towards the Mission and to present the actions and initiatives which contribute to the Mission’s goals and that may be scaled up and replicated in other sea basins. MAELSTROM will be represented by our colleagues Isabel Sousa Pinto and Luis Viera from CIIMAR, under the Research & Education Table at the side event BlueMissionMed 1st Mediterranean Stakeholder Forum that will take place on May 30 from 12:00 to 13:00.

The Research & Education Table will follow an interactive format, with two sessions:

  • Inspire and Inform – a moment to showcase inspirational case studies from Research & Education stakeholders where our colleagues will present MAELSTROM’s main achievements in research, ocean literacy and social engagement.
  • Blue Mission Med Stakeholder Forum – supported by an interactive online tool, this session is designed to identify key aspects towards implementing the Mission Lighthouse and to elaborate concrete actions (what and how) for each category.

Both sessions will provide the opportunity to share insights with the EU Commission and to network and to strengthen the international stakeholder community engaged in the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”, which aims to eliminate pollution and make the blue economy carbon-neutral and circular. The Mission supports regional engagement and cooperation through area-based “Lighthouses” in major sea/river basins. The event will welcome stakeholders from the Mediterranean basin, international and sea basin intergovernmental organisations as well as representatives from regions, cities, ports, islands, shipping, industries, academia, education, researchers, investors, NGOs, citizens and youth.
